Diego Piraro is the pen name of Dan Piraro, who is best known as the cartoonist responsible for the widely syndicated newspaper cartoon feature Bizarro. Since moving to Mexico in late 2016, he has returned to his first love, painting, under the name Diego Piraro, in honor of the art of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

Piraro’s award-winning comic, Bizarro, has been appearing daily in hundreds of newspapers since 1985 and enjoys a large following online. He has published 18 books of cartoons, art, and prose and has won numerous awards for his cartoons and fine art.

Piraro has also toured with a one-man multimedia show about his cartoon career, which won the New York International Fringe Festival’s “Best Solo Show” award. He has regularly performed as a stand-up comedian and singer-songwriter, and in 2014 he was the onscreen host of a prime-time reality show on FOX TV called Utopia

Now mostly retired from cartooning, he dedicates the majority of his time to traveling around Mexico and creating art inspired by the inexhaustible fountain of surrealistic inspiration the country has to offer.

Dan (Diego) and his partner, Christy Higgins, live year-round in Mexico.
